Never heard of Singles’ Day? You’re not alone.
No, we mean that literally. You’re not alone because if you were, you’d already know about “bare sticks holiday,” which celebrates pride in being single and takes place on–what else?–11.11. Since its first celebration in the 1990’s, held at Nanjing University in China, Singles’ Day has spread rapidly as a date when single people celebrate with other single friends.
Singles’ Day vs. Black Friday
Alibaba has transformed this Chinese festival into the world’s biggest online shopping day, making Black Friday look like a blip in the system. According to Forbes Magazine, in 2016, retailers on Alibaba’s eCommerce platform took in $17.8 billion in gross sales on Singles’ Day, compared with the $3.34 billion that consumers spent online during Black Friday that same month.
But the Singles’ Day festivities aren’t limited to 11.11 alone. Alibaba’s four-hour “countdown gala” preceding the holiday is a massive event in its own right, attracting over 400 million viewers last year, which is more than three times the number of people who watched this year’s Super Bowl. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, the 2016 countdown gala featured global stars including Kobe Bryant and David and Victoria Beckham.
